Barton Hall Exam Protocol

Barton Exam Logistics (last updated 08/31/2023)
For faculty assigned Barton for preliminary exams and finals

The Basics

  • The building will be open at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start and will be staffed by Building Care.
  • Seats are grouped into three sections (West, Central, East) of 150 tables each. Each table seats two students; each section seats three hundred students (see diagram below).
  • Classes will be assigned one, two or three sections based on enrollment.

Student Arrival

  • Students may enter the building from the west or the east. The entry at the west end is one level below the main floor level, so students need to enter and use one of the three staircases to get to the exam space. The accessible entrance directly into the space is from the east end.
  • Proctors should monitor the flow of students into the space and encourage them to move directly to finding a seat.

Amenities

  • A water fountain with a bottle filling station is located on the west end of the bleachers on the south side of the space.
  • Special provisions for power have not been provided. Please contact Julie Parsons at least 2 days in advance of your scheduled exam time to discuss your needs and make arrangements. Please note, if there is an additional expense for extra power needs, a Cornell account number will need to be provided.
  • Provisions for wifi are not automatically provided. Please contact scheduling@cornell.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of your scheduled exam time to request wifi or review options for alternative locations.
  • A small sound system is provided in the space.

Ventilation

  • If the weather is mild and all instructors assigned to the space agree, ventilation in the space can be increased by opening the north doors and/or asking the building care staff to open the windows.
  • This option is by assessment at the time of the exam and should be monitored throughout the exam given the potential to impact student comfort and performance.

For Assistance

  • During the exam, if you have any immediate concerns about equipment or conditions in the space, please contact Dragan Mrdjen 607-882-1296 (weekends, and Monday through Friday after 1pm) or Phil Lorer 607-280-2971 (Monday through Friday, 5am-1pm). Dragan and Phil are the custodial manager for the space, and will be in contact with the staff onsite.
  • After the exam, if you have any feedback regarding the logistics or these directions, please email scheduling@cornell.edu. All feedback is helpful in instituting continuous improvements.
